More about Dealers and Distributors
Distributorship and dealership arrangements extend more freedom to
business owners in exchange for providing less initial and ongoing training
and support.
Both distributors and dealers rely on the manufacturer for technical
support, advertising contributions, product repairs, maintenance and
service policies, new product training, volume discounts, favorable
payment terms, and established return policies. Likewise, manufacturers
rely on distributors and dealers to be financially stable, insure prompt
payment, recruit and train qualified sales personnel, and insure a preferred
display or stocking of their products.
Individuals seeking self-employment opportunities who want to have
an alliance with an established name brand product, but who desire to
retain essentially unlimited freedom to operate independently, are excellent
candidates for distributorship and dealership opportunities.
Manufacturers that offer distributorship and dealership alliances are
generally not concerned about the operation of the individual's business
beyond the attention given to selling and servicing their products.
Other issues that may ultimately affect the success of the individual's
business—such as the location, number of staff, accounting practices,
and other basic operating principles—generally don’t factor
into these kinds of business relationships.
